The last decade the devotion of La Santa Muerte in Mexico has attracted a remarkable number of followers. This up-surge took momentum after the erection of a street altar to Saint Death in Mexico City in 2001. Despite of being accustomed to numerous practices surrounding skeletons and death in Mexico, it took society by surprise that thousands of devotees suddenly gathered in the streets in Mexico City to pray to a personified Death, who per definition never has lived an earthly life and still is considered a saint.
